Marriages are not made in heaven any more, but in marriage bureaus. Hence, matrimonial demands have gone beyond a/s/l (age-sex-location), caste and religion. They have become more elaborate than ‘green eyed, fair, convent educated girl/guy’. For some, marriage is now about getting a
Salman Khan or an Aamir Khan and a
Katrina Kaif or a
Kareena Kapoor. Well, almost, since they wish to marry someone who resembles their favourite star, the real idol being way beyond reach.
Quiz Ritu Chandra, an architect, about what she’s looking for in her groom. She states clearly, “John Abraham”. But she’s not the only one. Dr Rajendra Bhavalkar, head of Akshada Marriage Bureau, has met some demands for lookalikes of Katrina, Aishwarya, Salman and Aamir. “It's not just features, but they ask for people with the same face." But what happens to such demands? He smiles, “People have applied with forms that clearly mention the actors that they are looking for. When it came out in the tabloids that Salman Khan was looking for a bride, many women were ready to get noticed by him through our bureau.”
Not just Bollywood stars, Marathi actors have huge demand, too. Mahindra Kanitkar, director, Anurup Vivah Sanstha says, “When Maharashtrian parents come, they demand for Mrunal Kulkarni. They even say that even if it’s not her lookalike, at least she should be homely and simple like her.”
Though Ash and Katrina lead the way, Madhuri, Kareena and Deepika Padukone aren’t far behind. For girls, it’s Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, closely followed by John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan. Manpreet Kaur from Saath Phere has interesting stories. She says, “Yesterday, I got a client who wanted an exact copy of John Abraham for her daughter, just because she was his fan. She was even ready to wait for a year for a suitable groom. Then there was this ‘self-confessed’ Abhishek Bachchan lookalike who wanted an Aishwarya Rai lookalike for himself. He was so adamant, that it was tough to convince him.”
But it’s not always the conventional good lookers that girls ask for. Niraj Jawnjal, director, Retail Guru Asia says, “I recently had a girl client who wanted an Ajay Devgn lookalike because she was impressed with the trailers of Singham and his films like Omkara. After looking at him in these films, she had concluded that he was strong and patient, settled in life, balanced and calm.” He also refers to some interesting choices of guys. "It's Ayesha Takia, because some guys want to marry someone who's cute and not high on oomph. Even Genelia D'Souza is very popular," he says, adding, “Many even demand for smaller stars like Neha Dhupia and Dia Mirza, if they can't get someone like Priyanka Chopra.”
So start searching. Who knows, you could actually be star struck on your wedding.
